1) Create An Account
Firstly if you havn't already create an account here on PopOverHttp.com.
You will need to take note of the URL called "Server[:Port]" in the setup section of the account page:
http://www.popoverhttp.com/users/[username]/
2) Install And Configure Scribe
If you havn't already, install i.Scribe or
InScribe and run it. Then:
- Click File->Options
- Accounts Tab
- Used the existing account (i.Scribe) or create a new account (InScribe).
- Give the account a name.
- Click the Receive tab.
- Set the protocol to "PopOverHttp".
- Set the server to "http://www.popoverhttp.com/users/[username]/". The trailing '/' character IS important.
- Set your PopOverHttp username and password in the fields provided.
- [Optional] Configure up any of the other parameters on the receive tab.
- Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
- Open "Internet Options"
- Click the "Connections" tab.
- Click "Lan Settings"
- Now the proxy server could be in the "Proxy Server" section, or in the "Advanced" button. If the "Address:" field is blank click the "Advanced" button.
- If it's all blank, you don't need a proxy and you can stop here and go to the next section.
- Once you have the server and port for the proxy open Scribe and:
- Click File -> Options
- Click the Connection tab
- In the "Optional HTTP Proxy" section put the proxy server and port in the form:
<server>:<port>
e.g.myserver:8080
3) Testing
Connect to the internet if you need to (i.e. start a dial up connection).
Then try connecting to the account by openning the Status Panel in Scribe and double click the PopOverHttp account.
You should see the Progress tab go into the "Connecting..." state and then maybe download some mail. If not you
can click the Log tab to see if there are any error messages there, which maybe useful in debugging a connection
related issue. You can also right click on the log tab content to copy it to the clipboard if you want to report
a problem to our support address.
At this point you should be able to send an email to "username@popoverhttp.com" and receive that email through Scribe.
4) [Optional] External Pop Setup
To retreive mail from a 3rd party POP mailbox using the PopOverHttp.com service you will need to go into your
account and enter the details of the server, username and password into the "External POP Mail Fetch"
section.
When you next connect to PopOverHttp.com to retreive mail for username@popoverhttp.com a POP connection will be made from
PopOverHttp.com to your external mailbox to scan for new email. A small number of new email will be downloaded into your
PopOverHttp.com account and will be available immediately. The next time you connect another small number of mail will
come through. Connections to the external mailbox are limited to once every 5 minutes. If you have "Leave mail on server:"
switched on in the External Pop Mail settings then mail will never be deleted from the external Pop Mailbox. If you turn
it off, when you delete the mail from your PopOverHttp.com account the delete will propagate to
the external Mailbox on the next connection.
